Homeowners insurance becomes a focal point nationwide during natural disasters, highlighting the significance of having sufficient coverage to rebuild in case of a calamity. The impact of these events, both in terms of devastation and financial loss, underscores the necessity of ensuring adequate insurance protection for your home. In 2022, the U.S. experienced 18 individual billion-dollar disaster events, leading to $171.5 billion in damages, as reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Fortunately, the majority of Americans are not affected by widespread natural disasters, however, millions of homeowners face property losses annually and must file insurance claims. The most frequently reported claims on homeowners insurance stem from incidents that could happen unexpectedly, underscoring the importance of homeowners being ready for such risks.
Water damage claims are most common

According to Bonnie Lee, Vice President of Property Claims at Mercury Insurance, water damage claims are the most frequent. Although some risks are seasonal, it is a year-round possibility. Homeowners should regularly inspect appliance hoses and water pipes to prevent cracks or leaks.
If any issues are found, prompt repair or replacement is crucial. One more measure that all individuals can take to safeguard their homes against leaks is to shut off the main water supply when they are away for a long period. Coming back from a peaceful vacation only to discover water flowing through the house is something nobody desires.

Smart home technology offers an additional level of security for homeowners through continuous monitoring to identify water pipe leaks. Water pressure sensors can be synced with smartphones and are capable of automatically turning off the main water supply in case of a leak or pipe burst. Furthermore, implementing this technology may lead to discounts from insurance companies such as Mercury Insurance.
Lee also points out that the majority of homeowners insurance policies do not provide coverage for flood damage resulting from storm surges or overflowing water bodies. Therefore, she advises homeowners to seek guidance from their local insurance agent on safeguarding against such incidents.
Fire damage is a concern for homeowners
Although water damage claims are prevalent, fire damage is also a potential worry for homeowners and can arise from various sources. According to the National Fire Protection Association, there were 1,353,500 fires attended by local fire departments in 2021, leading to $15.9 billion in property damage. Lee advises taking charge of what you can control and protecting against the risks that are beyond your control.

"The majority of home fires occur due to lack of attention or carelessness. These fires can be avoided if individuals do not leave items such as lit stoves, fireplaces, candles, or portable heat sources unattended.
It is also important to avoid overloading electrical outlets and using appliances with damaged electrical cords," she explains.
Theft can be costly
Although theft may not directly endanger the physical integrity of a home, it can still be expensive and leave homeowners feeling fearful and violated. By implementing basic yet commonly neglected measures such as securing doors and windows and avoiding leaving spare keys in obvious spots, homeowners can protect their property from theft.

Numerous smart home gadgets can help prevent burglaries by enabling homeowners to control lights, check security cameras, and activate security systems remotely via their smartphones. Lee emphasizes that their claims team is dedicated to assisting customers in recovering from losses, aiming to swiftly restore normalcy in the event of an unfortunate incident.
